Parents in the District should be receiving a voice call about this with details.
At approximately 3:35 pm an oversized load semi was travelling South on South Walnut in Stewardson. When our bus turned South onto South Walnut the oversized load was stopped 2 block ahead. The driver slowed down to decide on another route or street to turn on. As the bus was travelling forward, a pole on the East side of the road fell onto the front hood of the bus. The wire on the pole unattached from that pole and was lodged in the stop arm of the bus. It can only be assumed that the oversized load had previously hit the line above to cause the pole to become unstable, but it happened prior to our bus being on that road. The driver immediately notified the Transportation Director and the Superintendent who then immediately notified emergency personnel. All students were kept on the bus during this time. The line was a communications line, but in this situation all lines are treated as dangerous until removed by appropriate first responders. The line was removed from the bus and the students were then put in two busses to be transported home approximately 3:50.
We want to thank our first responders that showed up to the scene to assist. We would also like to thank our bus driver Katie Dandurand for staying calm and following protocol. Last, we would like to thank some of the older students on that bus, in a time of fear for some, they made their way to the younger students and read to them and kept them calm.

Congratulations to Morgan Mathis on being named Strasburg's Volunteer of the year for 2023! Morgan is a senior here at Stewardson-Strasburg High School and is very involved here as well as in her community. Way to go Morgan!
